Bicycle safety
Cyclists are governed by the Highway Traffic Act (HTA), and under the HTA, a bicycle is considered a “vehicle” but not a “motor vehicle”. Cyclists are to travel in the furthest right hand lane of a “highway” (street, road, etc.) and keep as far right as practically possible. When travelling on a one-way street, cyclists must travel in the direct of traffic. Where a bike lane is present, the bike lane must be used.
When approaching an intersection, cyclists must come to full stops at all stop signs and traffic lights where indicated to do so. If a cross walk is present, bicycles must not enter the cross walk until it is clear of pedestrians. Before executing a turn, cyclists must properly indicate that they are planning to change direction. To indicate turning left, extend the left arm horizontal to the left side of the body. To indicate turning right, extend the hand and arm upward and beyond the left side of the body.
It is important to note that individuals under 16 years of age must wear a helmet.
