Can You Apply for Long-Term Disability Benefits for Anxiety and Depression Caused by COVID-19?

Q: As a result of contracting COVID-19, I have developed anxiety and depression that prevents me from working. Can I apply for long-term disability benefits?

A: There are some individuals who will experience mental health issues and symptoms as a result of contracting COVID-19. There are others who have suffered from prior mental health challenges which have worsened by COVID-19. Long-term disability benefits cover both physical and mental/emotional conditions as long as they prevent you from doing your job.

Long-term disability benefits are designed to cover expenses and treatment while you recover from an illness or disability as long as you meet the specific criteria outlined in your disability policy. If you are prevented from working for a due to the virus, complications from the virus or as a result of mental health issues resulting from the contraction of the virus, you may be entitled to disability benefits if you have access to a disability policy. You are still required to follow the normal procedures for disability claims and go through the normal requirements for medical documentation. There is usually a waiting period before you can apply for these benefits.

Making a successful long-term disability claim is often challenging and may be more so now during the pandemic. Speaking with a disability lawyer and obtaining legal advice can assist you in navigating the system and getting your disability benefits approved.
