Distracted Driving Doesn’t Take a Holiday: Keeping Roads Safe in the Fall
As the seasons change, so do the driving conditions. Shorter days, wet leaves, early frost,
and busier roads around Thanksgiving and Halloween all add to the risks of fall driving. But
one danger stays the same year-round: distracted driving.
Distracted driving is more than texting behind the wheel. It includes eating, adjusting GPS
or music, talking to passengers, or even focusing on Halloween decorations instead of the
road. Taking your eyes oS the road for just two seconds doubles your risk of a collision and
at highway speeds, that’s like driving blindfolded the length of a football field.
In Ontario, distracted driving is a serious oSence with steep fines, demerit points, and even
licence suspensions. More importantly, it’s one of the leading causes of preventable
accidents and injuries.
This fall consider the following tips:
🍂 Keep phones out of reach or set to “Do Not Disturb.”
🍂 Plan routes before leaving and program GPS in advance.
🍂 Take breaks to eat or make calls instead of multitasking.
🍂 Pay extra attention in residential areas where children may be out for Halloween.
Distracted driving doesn’t take a holiday and neither should safety. By staying focused,
drivers can help ensure that everyone makes it home safely this season.
