Tips for Staying Safe on Halloween Night!

Halloween night is approaching and so is the potential for
accidents and injuries. Soon our dimly lit neighbourhoods will be full of
children trick-or-treating and drivers navigating busy streets. There are some
steps that trick-or-treaters, homeowners and motorists can take to avoid
personal injuries and keep Halloween safe for all.

If you are a parent;

  • Reiterate
    to your children to look both ways before crossing the street;
  • Instruct
    your children to use the designated crosswalks;
  • Remind
    your children to walk on the sidewalks and not the street;
  • Instruct
    your children to walk between houses and not to run;
  • Ensure
    your child’s costume fits well to minimize the risk of tripping;
  • Provide
    your child with a lightweight flashlight to carry while walking;
  • Add
    reflective tape on costumes so they are easy to spot by drivers;

If you are a homeowner:

  • Remove
    any tripping hazards from your porches, walkways, driveways and lawns;
  • Keep
    your external property well-lit;
  • Avoid
    open flames such as candles in front of doorways and walkways where they
    may come into contact with children’s flammable costumes;

If you are a driver:

  • Drive
    slower than usual;
  • Be
    aware of other driver’s blind spots;
  • Be
    alert and mindful of trick-or-treaters and pedestrians.

Accidents do happen, but following some basic safety tips
can keep Halloween night full of tricks and treats, not injuries.

Happy
Halloween!
